Day 9 - Annagry to Londonderry Northern Ireland

Today we drove from Annagry in Ireland to Londonderry in Northern Ireland.

I finally got to enjoy a smoked salmon and scrambled eggs breakfast at our hotel which got me stoked for the day. The first stop was only a couple km down the road to check out Leo's Tavern, the venue where the group Enya got their start.

We continued driving along The Wild Atlantic Way with a few spots where you could pull over to catch some great vistas even though is was a cool (8C) overcast day with some showers.

We stopped at Glenveagh National Park to visit the Castle and Gardens.

They had the interior set up as a self guided tour of several of the rooms.

We wandered through the walled garden which was beautifully maintained. The gardens had to be walled to keep the plentiful red deer from eating the plants.

They even had a swimming pool down by the Loch.

From here we continued our drive to Londonderry passing through strangely named towns like Letterkenny, Manorcunningham, Gweedor and Money Beg. We drove up a one lane road for several km to get to a nice vista point at Grianan of Ailech.

We crossed into Northern Ireland anticipating we would have to go through Immigration but apparently not required. We navigated into the heart of Londonderry to the apartment we rented and found it was located in the heart of the site of the Bloody Sunday massacre. In fact our rental car is parked in a courtyard where the British Army cornered and killed several unarmed protesters. The area looks a little sketchy but we did OK heading out for supper. We are only a couple blocks from the old walled city which is chocked full of bars and restaurants. The apartment is two storeys in a row house and quite nicely renovated. The important feature is a washer and dryer which will provide us with enough clean clothes for the remainder of our trip.

We are the top two floors on the end unit

Lots of street art depicting "The Troubles"

Day 15 - Dublin Day 2

We were a little tired after all of the city tours we have been doing so we tried to take it a bit easier today and kept it to 12,000 steps...
