Day 2 - Cork Ireland

After a day with little sleep, we managed to drag ourselves out of bed in time for breakfast which the hotel comped us! An $80 value that included eggs Benedict! We were now refuelled and fit to go on a walk-about in downtown Cork. We headed to the main street taking in the flavour of the local architecture.

Our first stop was the #1 tourist attraction, "The English Market" which is an indoor fresh food market with a complete selection of meats and vegetables plus some extra treats. Grocery prices are not cheap here also with beef tenderloin priced at the equivalent of $110/kg.

The city core is criss-crossed by the River Lee with multitudes of bridges making for a traffic bottleneck. We wandered along the riverbanks taking in the historical sights and architecture.

We visited Red Abbey tower which is one of the oldest ruins in Cork dating back to the 1540's

There was an old port here which is now in ruins.

We found a downtown pedestrian mall that had lots of nice shops and bars.

From there we went to Elizabeth Fort which provided an elevated view of the city.

Next to the fort was Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral. We walked around it but did not go inside. I thought the 16 euro entrance fee for a few photos was a bit expensive.

By this time we were getting a bit weary and decided to head to one of the last Cork highlights on our list, a brew pub! I tried a couple local IPA's and Chris had a not so local wine while we rested our feet.

We returned to the hotel for a rest before heading out to a local Irish Pub for supper. A really interesting place in an old renovated department store.

We made it back to our room as the sun was setting for a recharge before we get on the road again tomorrow.

Day 15 - Dublin Day 2

We were a little tired after all of the city tours we have been doing so we tried to take it a bit easier today and kept it to 12,000 steps...
